Superlative adjectives
Superlative adjectives are used to highlight that a thing or
person is the most of a group and helps us for highlighting that something or
someone is at the upper or lower limit of quality.
There are four different types of comparative adjectives.
The first type
Short adjectives or one syllable adjectives
These adjectives are made by adding the article “the” before the adjective and
the letters “est” at the end of the adjective
For example
Here the adjectives used are short adjectives also called
one syllable superlative adjectives. There are also adjectives that end in
consonant + vowel + consonant
(CVC)
like “big”, with those adjectives is necessary to double the last consonant to
make the superlative adjective.
As we can see in the example above, “big” ends
in CVC that’s why we need to double the las consonant to make the superlative
form.
Second type
Superlative adjectives with two or more syllables ending in “y”.
For these adjectives we need to replace the letter “y” with “iest”
+ and use the article “the” before the adjective.
For example
Third type
Long adjectives or superlative adjectives with two, three,
four or more syllables.
For these adjectives we need to add the article “the” + the
word “most” before the adjective.
The structure is the next one; “the + most + adjective” or “the
+ least + adjective”
(to make negative sentences)
For example
Remember that you have to follow the spelling rule because
if you don’t do this you could make a lot spelling mistakes, for example you
may write “she is the most tallest person here”
which is wrong because the first rule written at the beginning tells us that
short adjectives or adjectives with just one syllable need only the article “the”
before the adjective and the letters “est” at the end of the adjective to
become them in superlative adjective, therefore the correct way is; “She the
tallest person here” Not “she is the most tallest person
here”.
Here you can see a chart with all the rules mentioned
here.
