¿Cómo y cuándo usar was y were?
Para
comenzar respondamos la primera pregunta
Was y
were son el tiempo pasado del verbo “to be”. Ambos verbos son muy comunes
en la vida diaria y necesarios al hablar de acciones pasadas.
Was y were tienen el mismo significado al traducirse al español, pero cada
uno tiene un uso especifico.
Was y
were son usados en diferentes oraciones gramaticales, como el uso de was y were
al utilizer “wish” para hablar de algo que deseamos en el presente pero que no
se cumple, pero en esta ocasión nos centraremos en cómo usar was y were
in tiempo pasado.
Was and were son la forma en tiempo pasado de los auxiliaries, am, is y
are.
Was es usado con sustantivos singulares, mientras que were es usado con sustantivos en plural. La forma de usar was y were con los siguientes pronombres

wans’t |
It |

wans’t |
She |

You |
were |
weren’t |
We |

Recordemos
que el pronombre “you” es usado para referirnos a una persona o mas de una
dependiendo de la situación (o contexto), sin importar cual sea el caso siempre
usaremos “were” con el pronombre “you”. De la misma manera en la que
siempre se usa “are (plural)” con el pronombre “you” sin importar
si se habla en plural o singular de la misma manera se usara siempre “were”.
“You was” es totalmente incorrecto.

se mencionó anteriormente was y were son usados para hablar de
acciones pasadas, así que ahora veremos la estructura para realizar oraciones

que también podemos usar was y were para realizar oraciones negativas

For
making question using was and were we only need to change their
position in the sentence structure and add a question mark.
Estructura
Was/were + prononbre + complemento +?

Ahora es momento de aprender a usar Now its time to learn how to answer questions with was and were in a short way. First of all, you need to know that there is a simple rule that we need to follow which is, “in the way someone asks you, is the way you will answer”. I’m not trying to be mean, but to clarify this look at the next example.
A:
Was your brother at school las
Monday?
B:
Yes, he was/No, he wasn’t.
As
we can see in the example above, the question starts with was so for answering the question we need to use was too. Remember to be carefully when
fallowing the rule mentioned above, look at the next example:
A:
Were you the manager of that
company?
B:
No, I wasn’t/Yes, I was.
As
you can see the question starts with were,
but we are not answering using were,
why? Well, you need to remember that were
is only for plural things (an exception occurs with the pronoun “you”) that’s
why although the question starts with were
we used was to answering it. The
next example shows us when to answer using were.
A:
Were they working with you?
B: Yes, they were/No, they weren’t.
