First conditional

 First conditional

Inicio-Home

The first conditional is used to express a future possible consequence of a realistic situation. It is used to talk about actions or events in the future which are likely to happen or that have a real possibility of happening.

In first conditional sentences the first part of the sentence has 50% chance of being fulfilled.

The first conditional is used for a real possible situation with its possible future consequence.

Its structure

The first conditional sentence is made by two parts. The first part is the possible real situation (present) and the second part is the future possible consequence (use, will, may, or might).

Sentence structure

If + pronoun + verb in simple present + complement + pronoun + will-may-might + verb in simple present + complement.

Example

  • If I get a better job, I will have more cash to spend.
  • If I have more cash to spend, I’ll be able to buy anything I want.

The sentences have two parts, the first part starts with the possible real situation and the second part is the possible future consequence. When we start the sentence with the conditional “if” it’s important to add the comma “,” when the first part of the sentence is finished.

Example

  • If it rains tomorrow, I will stay all day at home.

The sentence can start with possible consequence, but in this case don’t use a comma “,” look at the next example.

  • I will stay at home if it rains tomorrow.
  • I will have more cash to spend if I get a better job.

Negative way of the first conditional.

  • If I can buy anything I want, I won’t save any money.
  • If you buy a new cell phone, you may not like it better than your old one.
