Interaction in the English Learning Classroom

Inicio-Home

Interaction in classroom allows the students and teacher to exchange ideas, feelings or thoughts about something. Interaction is basically people communicating back and forth with language.

The second language acquisition process has 5 stages; the pre-production, early production, Intermediate fluency, speech emergence and advanced fluency. In every stage the interaction will be the key to help the students going throughout the process of learning a second language, even though at the first stage students just can nods “yes or no” answers because they are beginners.

Something important is that the interaction occurs not only between teacher and students, but also between students- students. Interaction allows the students to get more vocabulary and enhance their knowledge.

Looking back to the five stages of learning a second language, let’s see the stage number three called “speech emergence” where the students already have gained a lot of comprehension and they start to write and reading in the second language, they also can produce simple sentences which can be used not only in writing, but also in speaking. Teachers can develop small activities to create interaction in classroom like, answering questions about a specific topic.
In stage number four (intermediate fluency) students have excellent comprehension, they make mistakes, but they can make complex sentences and are able to communicate more by writing and speaking. Finally, the stage number 5 (advanced fluency) here comes what we talk about at the begging, why? Well, because in this stage students must converse with others (the interaction is not only between teacher-student) on a regular basis in order to grown their fluency and confidence. Learners need more opportunities to get involve in the new language in order to maintain fluency in it, and teachers can create these opportunities by the classroom interaction.

Interaction can occur in different ways, for example teachers can start asking common questions about students’ next vacation, their plans for the weekend, activities they like and dislike and so on. According to the behaviorists theory we learn by associating events. We also learn throughout rewards and punishments and something that I find more important in my opinion and according to this theory is that we learn by observation and imitating what we see and listen. Since this we can see how important is the interaction in classroom because this is going to help the students to enhance their knowledge.

According to the linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky, his theory says that "we are born with an innate ability to learn language, and with little guidance, children will naturally learn language"(see learning styles). Chomsky argues that we must be born with a language acquisition device, following this, interaction improves the students’ knowledge and it's important because it's proved that kids learn faster than adults do. So, we can say that interaction in classroom is the core to help the students grown their language, and this is more important when we are teaching EFL because the interaction in classroom most of the time is the only place where they practice their target language.
